The CMMS academic program has produced consistently high student achievement for over 17
years.  Results of testing show our students to be one to three years ahead in reading and
mathematics as compared to their public school counterparts.  Our core curriculum consists of five
learning areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language Arts, Mathematics and Cultural Studies
(including Geography, History, Science, Art & Music).

At the Elementary level (Grades K-5), the curriculum emphasizes higher order thinking and
association between different areas of study, in addition to content knowledge.  (Please refer to
“Philosophy- Elementary Program” for a more detailed description).

Curriculum
PRACTICAL LIFE
Children learn to care for the  environment, learn
self development skills such as zipping and
pouring liquids, and grace and courtesy skills.
SENSORIAL
Children develop sense of sight, touch, sound,
taste and smell by distinguishing, categorizing
and comparing colors, size, sound, texture or
shape.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Children use language activities to increase
vocabulary and conversational skills, develop
writing and reading skills, and begin an
understanding of grammar.
MATHEMATICS
Children learn not only number recognition and
place value, but also to solve problems and to
develop a visual image of mathematics.
CULTURAL STUDIES
Children learn about people, their countries and
the world through holiday celebrations, cultural
observations, maps, flags, food,  music, and
pictures.  Science activities and  topics include
differentiation between living and non-living
things as well as between animals and plants
(botany, zoology, ecology, etc.)
PRACTICAL LIFE
Children continue to develop concentration,
coordination, self-reliance, and self-discipline.
Children master increasingly challenging and
developmentally appropriate tasks that lead
them toward the care of self and of the social
community within which they live and learn.
SENSORIAL
Children develop a foundation for understanding
the abstract by distinguishing, categorizing and
comparing objects.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Students practice reading and writing skills
covering topics in science, history, geography,
and the arts.  Formal grammar, punctuation,
word study, spelling, and sentence analysis are
systematically introduced upon mastering basic
reading and writing.
MATHEMATICS
Along with the principles of arithmetic,
elementary students are introduced to the study
of the fundamentals of algebra, geometry, logic,
and statistics.  The students also learn the
practical applications of mathematics in every
day life, such as measurement, handling
finances, making economic comparisons, and
gathering data and statistical analyses.

SCIENCE
The primary focus of the science curriculum is
on the study of life.  Students also learn about
the process and “philosophy of science;” how
to ask questions, observe systematically,
collect specimens, gather and analyze data,
and conduct experiments.

CULTURAL STUDIES
The goal of the Cultural studies curriculum is to
develop a global perspective.  Consequently, the
study of history and world cultures forms the
cornerstone of the curriculum.  Topics include:
physical geography, continents of the world,
early man, ancient civilizations, American
History, and Citizenship.
